Let each person write in the language they know best

You may know what you mean but struggle to say it quickly in your partner's language. Start by naming the languages you want to use and how you want replies presented. You can each write in your own language in the same Unium chat and ask for an explanation both of you can read.

For example: “I will write in Portuguese and my partner in Japanese. Please explain each message in both languages, and ask us to check whether the meaning is right.” This is a request to the model, not a promise of perfect translation or a fully translated app interface.

Ask about tone and idioms, then confirm the meaning

A phrase that sounds ordinary to one person can sound abrupt to the other. Ask the AI to show the literal translation, suggest possible meanings in context, and flag expressions that may not carry over. Then ask the person who wrote it which meaning they intended.

“Explain two possible readings of this phrase without deciding what my partner meant. Ask them to confirm. Keep their original words beside the explanation.”

AI can miss humour, dialect or context and can confidently invent an explanation. Treat a reading as a possibility to check, not evidence of someone's feelings or motives.

Find out whether the disagreement survives the translation

Once you have checked the words, each person can restate the practical question. “Did you mean you cannot visit, or that you do not want to?” may reveal a translation problem. If both people understand and still want different things, name that disagreement rather than asking for endless rewording.

Ask for a short account of each position, keeping uncertain points visible. A fluent summary can still favour one person or omit something important. Both of you should correct it before using it as the basis for an agreement.

Keep language practice separate from a difficult discussion

If you want to practise each other's language, choose a different conversation and agree whether corrections are welcome. A relaxed exchange about dinner can be a place to ask about phrasing. A discussion about a hurtful event does not need to become a vocabulary lesson.

You can also agree to pause and return later. Speaking less fluently should not mean getting less time to explain your view. If distance is part of the difficulty, our long-distance communication guide covers contact expectations and practical plans. For the moments when you need the words quickly, the free bilingual couples phrasebook puts apologies, reassurance and requests for space side by side in eight languages.

Know what belongs outside a shared AI chat

Check who can read the chat before adding personal information: Unium chats are shared with account members by default. Add your partner to the account if you both want to use its shared chats. Direct invitations to individual chats require a trial or paid plan.

A translation tool cannot assess whether a relationship is safe. If you feel threatened or controlled, seek confidential support rather than using a shared chat to justify your boundaries. For legal, medical or other consequential translation, use a qualified professional appropriate to the situation.
