The awkward part is not the arithmetic
Splitting bills is easy to calculate and hard to talk about. Fifty-fifty is simple until one person earns twice as much. Splitting by income is fairer until you try to agree what counts as income, or what happens to the joint holiday, or who pays for the car that only one of you drives.
So it gets deferred. One person keeps a rough tally in their head, quietly resents it, and it surfaces during an unrelated argument about the dishwasher.
Do it in one chat, with both of you in it
Start a chat in Unium, send your partner the link, and they join in a tap. Say what you are trying to work out. The AI takes it from there: it asks each of you for the numbers and the constraints separately, in your own words, and then puts them together.
That order matters. Written down privately first, people say what they actually think about money. Asked across a kitchen table, they say what sounds reasonable.
What to ask it for
Once it has both sides, the useful requests are concrete:
- Run three splits side by side: equal, proportional to income, and proportional after fixed personal costs. Show what each person pays under each.
- Decide what is joint and what is not, and list anything you disagree on.
- Work out the monthly transfer that makes it come out right, so there is one payment rather than nine.
- Say which option it thinks is fairest here and why, given what you have both told it.
- Write it up as a short agreement you can both look at again in six months.
Ask for the reasoning, not just the number. The reasoning is the bit you will need when one of your salaries changes.
The plan stays in the thread
The chat is where the arrangement lives, and it is shared with everyone on your account by default, so neither of you is the keeper of the spreadsheet. When something changes, a raise, a new bill, a car, you reopen the same conversation and it already knows what you agreed and why.
One subscription, which is rather the point
It would be odd to buy two AI subscriptions to sort out your finances. One Unium plan covers everyone on the account, from $10 a month, and getting started is free on a model we choose for you.
Sensible limits
It is good at laying out options and being neutral about them. It is not a financial adviser, it does not know your tax position, and it should not be the last word on anything with legal weight, joint mortgages and prenuptial arrangements included. For those, take the summary to someone qualified.
For the wider pattern, see the shared AI chat for couples.
